The Andy Murray era is over. Is it Jack Draper’s time to shine?Admittedly, a second-round win over world No64 Facundo Diaz Acosta is no more than we would have expected from Draper, who is the 25th seed here. But the manner of Draper’s 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 victory – which occupied an efficient two hours and five minutes – was refreshingly businesslike, especially after his fellow British No1 Katie Boulter had fluffed her lines in what, on paper, had looked like an eminently winnable match.Dressed in Nike’s fuschia kit, Draper is flowering in the absence of Murray, having spoken before the tournament about the responsibility he feels to be the British standard-bearer.
His level here was brisk and solid, featuring plenty of incisive forehands and the sort of predatory movement that we remember from Kyle Edmund before Edmund’s knee sadly developed into a source of chronic pain.
“I didn’t know what to expect today because the other day I didn’t get enough time on the court,” said Draper, whose first-round opponent Zhang Zhizhen retired with a knee injury before their match had concluded.
“I felt like my tennis was in a good place, I felt like I was a bit flat at the start. As tennis players, we don’t always wake up feeling amazing. But my serve got me out of trouble a lot.
“This is the grand slam where I’ve had my best results. If I keep on improving, there’s no reason why I can’t do really well here.”This win continued his strong form in New York, where he has now reached the third round in all three appearances at the US Open. It is comfortably his best record at any of the four grand-slam events.
Draper’s reward is a a third-round tie against unheralded Botic van der Zandschulp, who beat the reigning Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz in a huge shock on Thursday.

Hello and welcome to coverage from the US Open as Jack Draper bids to reach the third round.
The Britsh No 1 had a difficult preparation amid a cheating row from the Cincinnati Open but he proved too much for China’s Zhang Zhizhen in the opening round, winning 6-3, 6-0, 4-0 before his opponent retired injured.
“It was a bit of a storm last week,” said Draper. “I played three tough matches there [at Cincinnati] and then obviously in the match against Holger [Rune, which came the day after the incident], I wasn’t all there. I was not only physically tired, but a bit mentally sort of bamboozled by the night before.
“It definitely took a few days to sort of physically recover from that weekend, mentally and emotionally. In the last couple of days, I feel like I’ve sort of freshened up and my mindset in competing here. I think today, I know he [Zhang] got injured and stuff, but I was ready to play my best tennis out there. I felt really, really good about myself.”
Draper added: “When you’re getting comments about cheating, lying and all those sorts of things it’s difficult, and it plays on your mind.
“It was a good experience to sort of have those emotions and have those feelings, and have to almost sort of block it out and focus on what’s important. Definitely the last couple of days, just getting rid of that, those feelings and sort of moving on.”
Today, Draper faces Argentine Facundo Diaz Acosta with the possibility of a showdown with Carlos Alcaraz in the next round.
