HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Your First Alert Weather Team has declared First Alert Weather Days Monday and Tuesday for the islands of Maui and Hawaii.
Radar indicated heavy rain continuing over Hawaii Island, with the heaviest rainfall in the Ka’u District. Rain was falling at a rate of up to on inch per hour, with additional heavy rain expected onto the early morning hours.
The flash flood warning covers the entire island of Hawaii.
The National Weather Service in Honolulu said the flood watch will be in effect from 4 a.m. Monday through 6 p.m. Tuesday.
A flood watch means that conditions will be present that could produce flash flooding. Low-lying areas and roadways prone to flooding may be closed in heavy rain due to runoff.
Rapid runoff could also cause property damage in more populated areas.
A plume of deep tropical moisture will be ushered in by a trough to the south of the state. This will combine with an upper-level disturbance to bring heavy showers and the potential for isolated thunderstorms.
The threat for heavy rain will be highest along the windward portions of the islands.
